THE APPLES OF UKRAINE
A week in Lviv in Western Ukraine. Beautiful, sunny and cold. Autumn has definitely arrived, and with it have also arrived the apples. Everywhere we go, in all the markets there are a bewildering array of them. All shapes and kinds…colours from deepest red to bright yellow, and everything in between. Dried apples (for the delicious apple cake called Yabluchnyk, and winter compotes) are also a staple here.
So, so different from the sanitized, plastic wrapped fruit I see in the supermarkets in the UK…I doubt if anyone knows, or cares what variety they are, but, in all their unsprayed, spotty, uneven and sometimes downright ugly glory, they all have one thing in common… They taste delicious!
